New classification takes effect in June

    – The San Miguel Community Services District Fire Department has received an improved Insurance Services Office Public Protection Classification rating, effective in June.

The department’s rating improved from Class 03/3X to Class 02/02X. According to the Insurance Services Office, Public Protection Classification ratings evaluate a community’s ability to provide structural fire suppression services. Ratings range from Class 1, the highest level of fire protection, to Class 10, which indicates minimum criteria are not met.

The district said the improved classification reflects enhanced emergency response capabilities and may result in lower property insurance premiums for residents and businesses.

According to the department, the rating improvement follows years of investments and operational changes, including staffing enhancements, expanded training programs, increased fire engine capacity, upgrades to firefighting equipment, improvements to emergency communications technology, and hydrant infrastructure improvements. The district said fire prevention efforts, public education programs, and community risk reduction initiatives also contributed to the classification change.

“This classification improvement represents a major achievement for the San Miguel Fire Department,” Fire Chief Scott Young said. “Moving from a Class 3 to a Class 2 rating reflects our department’s commitment to preparedness, and service to the community. It demonstrates that our investments in staff training, equipment, and infrastructure directly strengthen public safety while also providing potential insurance savings to our residents and businesses.”

General Manager Kelly Dodds said the improved rating reflects the department’s long-term efforts.

“This improved ISO rating is a testament to the Fire Department’s professionalism and the District’s commitment to supporting critical infrastructure, training, and community risk reduction,” Dodds said. “This achievement strengthens public safety and delivers real benefits to our community, including the possibility of lower insurance costs for property owners.”

The San Miguel Community Services District Fire Department said it will continue efforts focused on operational improvements, emergency services, and community engagement.
