SLO Police holding DUI checkpoint Friday
– The San Luis Obispo Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint on Friday, June 12, at a location within San Luis Obispo city limits.
The checkpoint will operate from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The department said the primary purpose of the operation is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt. Tim Koznek said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
The department reminded drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Police said some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with a person’s ability to drive. The department also noted that while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
According to the department, drivers convicted of a first-time driving under the influence offense face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.
The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program.
