Students refresh Virginia Peterson mural for national anniversary
Mural has been a longtime feature of the Virginia Peterson campus
– Students and staff at Virginia Peterson Elementary School recently restored a longtime campus mural during the final week of school in preparation for America’s 250th anniversary.
Led by teacher Megan Wortman, students and staff from the school’s Room 14 Learning Center spent the last week of school restoring and repainting a large-scale United States mural located in a campus recreation area.
The project refreshed the faded artwork with red, white, and blue paint as communities across the country prepare to mark the nation’s semiquincentennial in July.
The mural has been a longtime feature of the Virginia Peterson campus. School officials said years of sun and weather had faded its appearance, prompting the restoration effort. Students worked alongside staff to prepare, paint, and complete the updated design.
“This project gave students the opportunity to take ownership of their campus while contributing to something that will be enjoyed by Virginia Peterson students for years to come,” Principal Monica Pafumi said. “It was exciting to watch the mural come back to life.”
In addition to restoring the mural, the project provided students with experience in teamwork, planning, and community service.
School officials said the completed mural now serves as a centerpiece on campus and a symbol of school pride.
As communities prepare to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, the restored mural offers students a reminder of the nation’s history and the value of working together toward a common goal.
