Search for armed man who threatened students at recess finished at 2:15 p.m.

Update: While searching for a suspect who allegedly threatened two students at recess this morning, Paso Robles Police Department closed down the area surrounding the school and school officials locked down the school. The search by local law enforcement, including Paso Robles and Atascadero police departments’ K-9 units, California Highway Patrol’s airplane and helicopter, San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Office and San Luis Obispo County Probation Department, did not reveal any suspects or threats to the school or the students. Once the search was finished, school officials reopened Pat Butler campus and resumed normal operations. At that time, parents were able to pick up their children.

“Today when the school was locked down, we did a search in the area … no one was found in the area and no evidence was found for any leads,” Paso Robles Police Chief Robert Burton said. He said that the suspect was described by the students as a black adult male wearing a cowboy hat and a rifle or shotgun slung over his shoulder.

Burton advises that when people see anything suspicious to report it to the police. “I think what happened today is a good example of what should happen,” Burton said.

Original report Jan. 15, 2015, at 12:35 p.m.: Pat Butler Elementary School went into lock down today at 10:45 a.m. after two students reported that they had been approached by a black male adult during recess. According to a press release issued by the Paso Robles Police Department, the children said the suspect was on the outside of the athletic field perimeter and was in possession of a shotgun or rifle. After the suspect threatened the children, they ran back to the school buildings and reported the incident to school administration, who then immediately locked down the school.

Local law enforcement is on the ground searching for the suspect, while a plane circles the area. Residents have been encouraged to stay inside their homes during the search of the area around the 700 block of Nicklaus Street. Parents of Pat Butler students may gather at the district office at 800 Niblick Road. School officials are on-site with updates as available.

Reserving my judgment here. Here's a question to ponder. Was it a good idea to place lower income housing right next to a beautiful elementary that sits atop a vast field of escape?

    Jessica Ralls

Doesn't sound like you're reserving any judgment with that comment Joe… 🙁

    Adam J Lemon

So where would you rather this "lower income housing" you speak of be placed instead? Mr. Clayton, the armchair city planner.

    Steven Garcia

In any case, it's Paso Robles.

    Lee Kessis

Your politically-incorrect but accurate comment deserves consideration, Joe. We have a rental property in that area and can tell you first-hand how the neighborhood went downhill 10 yrs ago when those apts went in. Trash in the area, more vandalism, etc absolutely coincided with the apartments' development. Also home burglaries, car theft (our auto was swiped from in front of our house), bike theft, etc. No one wants to state the obvious. Now, in this particular case nobody knows yet if this scare is even legit. Kids said a black guy with a gun approached them. Maybe they're lying? Trying to get attention? I'm sure the cops are questioning them now for info and legitimacy of their claims

    Lee Kessis

Adam J Lemon , let's put it right next to your house, ok? How about you move down to North Spring St., say–smack dab next to Oak Park. Unlock your door at night and leave some bikes and other semi-valuable items out on porch. Try to walk w/your family after dark and see how safe you feel. I'd give you a week. All talk but no reality.

    Joe Clayton

Try oak park. That might be a start keep low income with low income. Smarty pants. This is my home town. What ever crazy wack Job that got this started I could care less where he resides except for the fact I have family in the neighborhood who would probably like there home values to rise a little.

    Sharay Lynn Russell

Really don't think it's about low income housing, more about the brush and hidden hills behind the playground. I've walked back there and it's scary and easy to hide. Hope they can catch the guy and get those kids to their parents safely

    Adam J Lemon

So systematic, institutionalized, socioeconomic segregation is your solution. Maybe these "low income" people you speak of have large families, and find it necessary to be close to public schools? Wouldn't you rather families with school-age children be in safe neighborhoods close to schools, as opposed to areas that might be threatening to them?

    Joe Clayton

There is or at least was a public school within walking distance of the oak park residential area. I went to school there it was called Georgia brown. Mr. Lemon please try again. Your argument has no valor. But worthy attempt

    Mark Zekanis

    You people are morons!!

    Frank Jackson

How about Mexico. That would be a good place for low income housing. Lol.

    Trinda Schleppenbach Mauck

Joe, you really are a moron. Heres a thought… how about move GUNS from public access, not schools. Less guns, more schools. Then education and learning will be more important than arming ones self, or making idiotic judgements about wherw this suspect may have come from.

    Lindy Cutler

Hmm my family is as white as they come Joe and they are down on their luck and had to move into those low income housing apartments. Good students and a hard working single mother trying to survive. Maybe your judgement is based on another low income housing development?

    Lindy Cutler

Hmm my family is as white as they come Joe and they are down on their luck and had to move into those low income housing apartments. Good students and a hard working single mother trying to survive. Maybe your judgement is based on another low income housing development?

    Dennis Fandrick

Lower income housing needs to be in oak park where it belongs

    Dennis Fandrick

In oak park south of jerry Renau where it belongs.

    Dennis Fandrick

    North of jerryreneau. Oops

    Dennis Fandrick

    FYA
Keep em north of jerry Renau Chrysler

    James Navarro

You mean it has no "merit", you Paso Roblean genius. And by your previous statement, Oak Park is poorly placed, because it's anywhere near a school.

    Dennis Fandrick

Barbed wire + check point at frosty freeze. Keep em north of that.

    Brittany Barber

Removing guns from the public doesn't necessarily help anyone except the criminals. Last time I checked it was still a constitutional right to be able to own a firearm and protect yourself and your family. I agree that education is being too streamlined and we need to focus on our kids and their future more, but disarming law abiding citizens only grants more power to the criminals

    Joe Clayton

So I see a couple different perspectives here. One is a family down on there luck and saying there white. (color has nothing to do with this issue). Because you live in low income doesn't make you trash just makes you broke. Possibly more vigilant in your families safety as well. As for the fascist in the group that believes our constitution is nothing but paper. Your argument fails as well. Based on legal grounds and security. Don't get me wrong more schools would be great if we had teachers that were worth a damn and hiding behind unions and or tenure. Now if we could see a few more charter based schools that have proven records show up we could see great success. Then we go back to your liberal hippy ass idea of removing all citizens right to keep and bear arms ( yes I added a word and paraphrased) if we as a civilization would bind together and police our own with moral rule then we would have no issues such as this. It is your style of thinking, lay down and pray someone els defends you that assisted my judgment in moving the hell out of my home state.

    Laurene Fischer

My Grandson goes here. I am just glad he is safe. Great Job on the Schools part to keep the kids Safe!!! Thank you!!!

    Dennis Fandrick

    Your ex 😉

    Dennis Fandrick

    Shots fired ???

    Mellissia Slawson

What about the suspected man in the kids bathroom at Virginia Peterson who was also put on lock down at 130????

    Joe Clayton

With all disagreement aside. I don't believe any shots were fired. And the Virginia Peterson incident went peaceful as well. I haven't found anymore details on it yet.

    Kevin Bruce

This is pretty retarded lol ya lets blame it on the economics of the neighborhood not the nutt with a gun who probably shouldn't have been allowed to have one…

    Dean Amaral

I think the school reacted very wisely with what they did. We are blessed that no one was injured. It sounds as if all our resources came together and work together to make everyone safe and to look for this suspect. Great job to the Paso Robles police dept in reacting fast.

    Larry Stone

so what about the low income housing on Creston Road, across from Virginia Peterson? want them to be moved to? since when does being low income be a reason to put some one down? shallow and lame

    Larry Stone

    Dawn Glove

    Dawn Glove

Yes police scanner said shots fired they found a lady in the 1700 block of Rambulette (sp) that stated she accidently fired a .38 into the dirt. After confirming her statement she gave officers permission to search her residence. It was all cleared shortly after.

    Larry Stone

    found to be not true

    Dawn Glove

    Oops *shots

    John Craig

So all gun laws should stay as they are? Because its all working so well!

    Brittany Barber

I don't see anywhere in my comment where I said the gun laws were perfect. All I said was a response to someone else's comment to take all guns away from everyone that it is a constitutional right to bear arms and taking them away from everyone only helps the criminals.

    Joe Clayton

Always glad to see such colorfully illustrated opinions. Paso was at one time a beautiful sleepy little town where everyone said hello to each other walking down the street. No it didn't matter what color you were. Even the field workers who spoke English would join in the family atmosphere. Just a little historical thought.

    Anne Crabbe

So is everything calm at the Paso Robles schools today?

    Larry Stone

Frank Jackson btw this is his wife, he didnt say that, i did. You dont know where I would walk cuz I have walked those streets and worse. I have family in Mexico, Im an 8th generation of this county, my family helped build this area up. But my statement was about those kids, how scared they were and still are. Hopefully the school will offer counseling. This could of ended up way worse and its pathetic that this has become something about who lives where and what ppl think about it. Thats not why it happened these things can happen anywhere and makes me sad how cruel ppl are to each other. oh yeah…I do…my husbands. enjoy your life in this county and hope your family stays safe

    Annette Aviles

These comments sicken and sadden me! You people are very ignorant to say the least!!

    Wendy Oliver

Why does everyone always have to blame, argue and judge? Evolve.

    Danny Martinez

I've seen just as many crazy low-income people as I have high-income people. The character of a person isn't based on their income, where they live, or the color of their skin so it's ridiculous to say that any of these factors matter. (Look at the people arguing this point, they're obviously exceptions to this "rule". As for the people who say we should take guns away from law abiding citizens, since when has outlawing something ever kept criminals from doing something. If we outlawed cars, do you think bank robbers would hesitate to use one? Do you think guns being illegal would prevent someone whith murder on their mind from using one because they didn't want to dl anything illegal? I know some of these people are actually trying to make a valid point, but come on people, at least TRY. Use a little common sense and try to be a little better than pure, ignorant scum.

    Jay Guadian

People who make ignorant suggestion like that ,are on the same category as that idiot who threaten lives..im glad no one got hurt…

    Alex Marlon Sanchez

Some really Racist n vulgar comments obviously by some uneducated trash! Yes i believe it is wrong n stupid to put low income housing in a middle class neighborhood lowering peoples property values! They should sue the city n its employees for this! But all these Racist n vulgar comments show your obvious ignorence Biggotry n mental issues!!!

    Alex Marlon Sanchez

I agree with Dennis keep low income housing north of 16th street east of Spring st.

    Gladys Moore

There is no more OAK PARK Dennis F.

    Gladys Moore

There is no foster freeze dennis. You are out of date..in everything you saying. ..wow….people aren't animal..barwire???really! !!

    Brittany Barber

Which is obviously why I have no idea who you are. Being so well versed on the subject, and I have never come I to contact with you before. Must be lacking something somewhere. Maybe that's why you're so fixated.

    Brittany Barber

I would try to explain sarcasm to you, but even if I use small words with single syllables you probably still wouldn't understand. Have a wonderful life
