Thirteen students received scholarships from the Community Foundation at a special ceremony at the San Luis Obispo Board of Supervisors’ most recent meeting. The Richard J. Weyrich Leadership Scholarship awards are awarded to accomplished high school students who meet or exceed scholarship guidelines. The students are awarded $3,000 as well as a special medal. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the scholarship.

Richard Weyrich was a West Point Graduate who served in the Korean War settled in Avila Beach. He passed away in 2002 and the scholarship program continues to honor his memory.

The foundation has given away $345,000 to 157 students over the past ten years. Next year the selected students are attending schools like Vassar, Yale, Cornell, Duke, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UCSB.
