Mayor tours damage caused from rainwater, mud

    – Paso Robles Mayor Steve Martin did a tour this morning of the areas in the city most affected by the recent record-breaking storm. In the area of Olive Street, particularly from 8th to 12th streets, rainwater caused massive erosion from the mountain that the streets are adjacent to, and flowed down the hill towards the river, leaving piles of mud in the wake.

“I wanted to come out here and get a better idea of where the really hard hit areas were,” said Martin. He explained that the runoff was something that happens in most large scale rain events, and that the city will have to asses the damage before it comes up with any solutions, as well as begin their clean-up efforts for the mud that is on city streets.

Long term solutions would include ways to both protect personal property, as well as potentially collect storm water to use as drought relief. “I think people saw hundreds of thousands of gallons of water run down the hill and thought, ‘Why aren’t we collecting this,'” said Martin. “The solutions to this issue will be very long term, and probably in the tens of millions of dollars, but it’s something that we as the city need to look at.”

Wish he'd stop by the 1700 block of Rivrrside. Not one City employee or Administrator has come by to discuss the failed design of the new 17th St. off ramp, and its drainage flaws. It will happen again, come the first big El Niño rain!… CalTrans Senior official said they warned the City it was wrong to use bark- told them it would block drains and cause flooding, but the City Senior Traffic Engineer demanded it, so they caved in to her wishes. She has a string of failed dedigns in this town. When will the City see that?

The city has slowly but steadily moved away from the wishes and needs of its citizens and now runs itself more like a liberal city – doing what they want and never mind what the little people think. At this time, Martin is all talk. He will probably want to grow city government to 'fix' these problems that should never have happened.
This was a freak occurrence and an unusual storm, but certainly raises red flags for what could come this winter.

It's nice to have captions on photos. I skim headlines, look at photos and read captions before I decide if I'm interested enough to read an article.

Considering the 4 year+ water crisis, I don't get why there wasn't a catchment system in place LONG BEFORE this recent storm…

Wondering if the 12th St. drainage introduced to us 2 + years ago was
designed to handle the runoff from the store. Project never happened,of course, so who knows?? This coming winter may be a big challenge for all of us on the west side!

Government is to busy telling us what we have to do instead of doing what they were elected to do. Stop electing politiçions and get some common sense in government.
