Varsity football: Camarillo 41, Paso Robles 14

After taking the opening kick-off, Camarillo (2-0) moved the ball down to the Paso Robles 20-yard line before a 20-yard touchdown pass from Jake Constantine to wide receiver Colby Stevens put the Scorpions on the scoreboard. The extra point was blocked by Bearcat Matthew Keller as Camarillo took a 6-0 lead with 9:20 remaining in the first quarter.
The ensuing kick-off had Bearcat Christian Erickson fielding the ball on his own 10-yard line and running 90 yards for an apparent touchdown. A holding penalty on Paso Robles (0-2) brought the ball back to their own 44-yard line.
Erickson then took a hand-off from quarterback Justin Davis and broke tackles to the 12-yard line. From the Camarillo 3-yard line, Davis ran the ball in to score for the Bearcats. With the extra point by Jonathan Jaimes, Paso Robles took a 7-6 lead with 5:48 left in the first quarter.
After the Bearcats held the Scorpions on their next possession, a pass from Davis to Steven Schouten took the ball to the Camarillo 38. The Bearcats drove to the Camarillo 8-yard line where Erickson broke several tackles before running into the end zone for another apparent touchdown, but a penalty against Paso Robles brought the ball back to the Camarillo 19-yard line. Camarillo stopped Paso Robles on a fourth down play and took over on downs to end the first quarter with the Bearcats holding on to their 7-6 lead.
Both teams traded possessions early in the second quarter before Camarillo managed to drive to the Paso Robles 2-yard line before Constantine threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Frankie Tostado. With the extra point, the Scorpions jumped ahead to a 13-7 lead over the Bearcats.
The Bearcats failed to secure a first down on their next possession. A short punt by the Bearcats gave the Scorpions the ball at the Paso Robles 35. Camarillo running back Isaiah Otis ran 30 yards to the Paso Robles 5-yard line and, on the ensuing play, ran the ball in to the end zone to score. The extra point was good, and the Scorpions padded their lead to 20-7 with 4:29 left in the half.
With Camarillo kicking off to Paso Robles, Erickson fielded the ball at his own 27-yard line and returned it all the way to the Camarillo 27-yard line. After Davis passed to Schouten to the Camarillo 2-yard line, a penalty on Camarillo put the ball on the 1-yard line where Davis ran a quarterback sneak for the touchdown. The extra point was good and the scoreboard read 20-14 with 3:51 left in the half.
After the Bearcats kicked off, the Scorpions moved quickly downfield, and had a fourth down and goal at the Paso Robles 2-yard line. On the following play, Otis took the ball in for his second touchdown of the night and, with the extra point good, Camarillo led 27-14 with 1:05 left in half.
The third quarter had the two teams battling back and forth. By the end of the third quarter, Camarillo had the ball to the Paso Robles 25-yard line.
In the fourth quarter, the Scorpions moved the ball to the 7-yard line when, on fourth down, their 23-yard field goal attempt was unsuccessful. The Bearcats were unable to advance the ball and were forced to punt. Camarillo had the ball at the Paso Robles 49-yard line when Otis took off on a 49-yard touchdown run to score for third time. With the extra point good, the Scorpions led 34-14 with 7:34 left in game.
The Bearcats failed to advance the ball and were once again forced to punt. Camarillo had the ball on the Paso Robles 45-yard line where Otis ran through the Bearcats’ defense for a 45-yard touchdown run, his fourth of the game. With the extra point good, the Scorpions padded their lead over the Bearcats to 41-14 with 4:23 left in game, the final score of the night.
