Update: Local woman gets eight years in prison for DUI death

–The women charged with manslaughter and other felony counts in connection with a deadly DUI crash in December 2015 changed her plea from not guilty, to no contest. She was sentenced last Tuesday to 8 years in prison at Chowchilla, according to reports.
The California Highway Patrol says Lauren Alderete was under the influence and driving the wrong way on highway 101 when her car crashed into oncoming traffic and resulted in the death of a 26-year-old Los Osos woman, Lindsay Faye Matzie on Dec. 16, 2015, as well as injuries to the other passengers in Matzie’s car. Alderete also suffered major injuries and is now in a wheelchair as a result of the collision.
At the hearing, it was reported Alderete expressed her apologies in a tearful statement. Matzie’s family also spoke at the hearing and made statements regarding how the crash has affected their lives.
Alderete will begin servicing her eight year sentence on May 4.

Alderete has been charged with felony counts of intoxicated manslaughter, drunk driving, and driving with a blood alcohol level of more than .08 percent in the wrong-way crash that killed 26-year-old Los Osos woman Lindsay Faye Matzie and injured two others.
Matzie was killed while driving southbound when Aldrete collided with her while driving the wrong way on the 101.
Matzie was a Morro Bay High School graduate. Her two passengers were taken to the hospital with major and moderate injuries.

CHP search for witness of events leading to fatal wrong-way collision
–Prior to the wrong-way collision that claimed the life of 26-year-old Lindsey Matzie of Los Osos, the errant driver, 22-year-old Lauren Alderete of Paso Robles, spent a portion of the evening of Dec. 15, 2015, with the individual pictured above.
These screen shots were obtained from security footage of the Taco Bell located on Santa Rosa Street in San Luis Obispo approximately an hour before the collision. This individual may be a valuable witness and may provide information regarding the events that led up to the collision.

–The woman who died in a wrong-way collision on the 101 early Wednesday morning has been identified as 26-year-old Los Osos woman Lindsay Faye Matzie. Matzie was killed while driving southbound when 22-year-old Paso Robles woman Lauren Aldrete collided with her while driving the wrong way on the 101.
Matzie was a Morro Bay High School graduate. Her two passengers were taken to the hospital with major and moderate injuries.
The two passengers in the Matzie’s car were Rotsen Y. Victoriano and Ken A. Cordova. Victorino is a 29-year-old male from San Luis Obispo. He was sitting in the right front seat, and sustained major injuries. Victorino was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. Cordova is a 26-year-old male from Atascadero. He was sitting in the right rear seat, and sustained major injuries. Cordova was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
Aldrete was taken to a local hospital and then flown to the Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. She was arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to reports. She remains in critical condition. Aldrete graduated Templeton High School in 2011.

One dead and three seriously injured as a result of the crash
–More details have been received regarding the fatal traffic collision that occurred on Highway 101 near Spring St. in Paso Robles early Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred at 3:14 a.m., and involved two cars. Vehicle one was a Ford, driven by Lauren Alyssa Aldrete, a 22-year-old Paso Robles resident. Aldrete was traveling at an unknown speed the wrong way down the Southbound 101, according to California Highway Patrol. Aldrete collided head-on with a Toyota, whose driver was a 26-year-old Los Osos resident. Aldrete was seriously injured.
Matzie died as a result of the collision. Two passengers, who are currently unidentified, were in the back seat of Matzie’s car, and they both suffered serious injuries.
When firefighters arrived at the scene they discovered a total of four trapped occupants, three in one vehicle and one driver in the second vehicle, with various injuries. Firefighters rapidly extricated three patients using the “Jaws of Life” in less than twenty minutes.
San Luis Ambulance Service Paramedics transported two patients with major injuries to Sierra Vista Medical Center’s level 3 trauma center, and one moderately injured patient to Twin Cities Community Hospital. The fourth occupant was pronounced deceased at scene.
Alcohol or drug impairment have not been ruled out as contributing factors to the collision at this time, CHP says.

Accident shut down entire Southbound 101
–One person is believed to have died in a traffic accident that occurred around 4 a.m. this morning on 101 South near Spring Street, according to initial reports. The accident involved two cars and caused the entire 101 South to shut down. Traffic was redirected to exit at 24th St. and detoured via S. Vine St. One lane was re-opened around 6:30 a.m.
First responders reportedly saw smoke and flames coming from one of the vehicles, and claimed that people were stuck inside. Eyewitnesses are reporting seeing an engine in the middle of the road.
No further details are available at this time. Updates will be posted.

Was fortunate enough to go to middle school with Lindsay and her twin sister, Lacey. I am shocked and saddened that this happened. My thoughts are with Lindsay and her family and friends at this time.
