Police apprehend violent suspect in SLO

Officers use minimal force to arrest armed suspect

Pettigrew

Daniel Pettigrew.

–On May 18, 2016 at approximately 8 p.m. City of San Luis Obispo Police Department officers responded to an incident at 2700 block of McMillian, after reports of a subject violently causing damage to a brick planter box. From witness information, officers determined the suspect to be Daniel Pettigrew, a known local transient.

At approximately 9 p.m. officers in the area of McMillian Street saw Pettigrew walking at the dead-end near the railroad tracks, according to police reports. An officer attempted to make contact with Pettigrew and ordered him to stop. The officer was in marked patrol car, a police uniform and identified himself as a San Luis Obispo Police Officer. As he encountered the suspect, Pettigrew reportedly told the officer “back off I have a knife.” Within close proximity to the officer Pettigrew raised the knife with his hand in a manner that caused the officer to become immediately concerned for his safety and he drew his service weapon to address the threat.

With the knife still in has hand Pettigrew turned and walked away at which time the officer holstered his weapon and retrieved a less-lethal option from his vehicle. Officers followed Pettigrew, orders were made for him to stop; however, he failed to immediately comply. Ultimately Pettigrew stopped and was convinced to throw the knife on the ground. Officers were able to use minimal amount of force necessary to take Pettigrew into custody without further incident. No one was injured in this confrontation.

Pettigrew was transported to San Luis Obispo County Jail where he was booked for felony vandalism, assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest. Bail was set at $25,000.
