Small town celebrates in classic Americana style

–With flags waved high and the stars and stripes draped on houses around every street, the Templeton community celebrated their country’s independence with their annual Fourth of July parade Monday.

Gwen Pelfrey was in charge of organizing the event and the Templeton Kiwanis Club hosted, as they always have. This year’s judges included Norma Moye, John and Jane Bertoni, Lisa Hamor and Cecil Martinez, with commentators Bob Finley, Mike Mesmer, Bo Davis, Marty Kudlac, and John and Wendy Richardson. Following along with this year’s theme “Let Freedom Ring,” each entry decked their floats and other vehicles in festive streamers, flags, and even horns. The parade was supposed to start at 10 a.m., but was only just behind schedule, as pointed out by one of the commentators, Bob Finely, who said jokingly, “We must be doing better than usual, we’re only ten minutes behind.”

The parade began with spectators rising and removing their hats as the North County Veterans Color Guard and Honor Guard marched by with the flag. The veterans were followed by the Grand Marshal, Greg O’Sullivan with honorees Dale and Milana Radford driving a classic Model-T. From there, the parade became a melting pot of different organizations and representatives showing their part in the community. Members of the Templeton Historical Museum drove an old school bus that was almost fully restored (save for the roof that is).

The Templeton High School drama department showcased a song from the play they performed in Scotland, “Little Shop of Horrors.” Soon afterward, the Templeton High Cheer squad kept up the energy in the crowd. A collection of families, dealerships, and clubs showed off dozens of cars and trucks of various decades, from Model-T’s to more recent and hefty Chevrolets. At one point, three trucks from the San Luis Obispo 4 Wheelers stacked their wheels one top of one another in a sort of vehicular pyramid; a sight that quickly became a crowd favorite.

Even representatives like Fifth District Supervisor Debbie Arnold, First District Supervisorial Candidate John Peschong, and Congressional Candidate Salud Carbajal came to push for their campaigns in this big election year.

As usual, the Templeton Fourth of July Parade was a huge hit with a large turnout. The people of the community were able to come and celebrate their independence together. They were reminded of what it truly meant to be an American. As a whole, they let freedom ring.

The Estrella Warbirds Museum drove their "almost completely restored" school bus and is currently looking for donations to complete it.

I thought the bus was being rebuilt by the Templeton Historical Museum Society?

Why don't you report the news instead of ignoring it and covering up the story? Isn't a reporters job to tell the truth? Or are you an advertising specialist?

Yesterday the Abolitionist Society of San Luis Obispo County actually was fighting to "Let freedom ring" while the parade comitee tried to stop us. We put together a beatiful and powerful float exposing that American supposed freedom is responsible for allowing millions of unborn humans to be murdered. The parade comity actually tried to block out float with their golf cart and stop us in person. The Sherif told us we could walk in the parade but we had to stop the other entries by standing in front of them and marching past when Mr.Pelfrey finally moved out of our way.

On Independant day the Tempelton parade tried to remove our freedom of speech. Without the intervention of the Sherif they may have successfully stop our call to end abortion.

Another example of the American midea covering up the truth and NOT doing there job!

You are certainly allowed to voice your opinion, but the 4 th of July parade is NOT an appropriate venue. Keep your politics out of holiday celebrations!

    Danny Ehinger

Jody Chase Independence day is not a time to fight for the independence of abused people in our nation? You celebrate your independence and freedom while withholding independence and freedom to others. That is hypocricy. Abortion is a moral issue not a political football. Real people are being murdered and todays americans care more about their holiday. Sad day in America!

The founders of our nation did not consider the right to life to be a political issue they call it a "certain inalienable right" in our Decleration of Independence.

The only way to actually honor our independence is to preserve it. The parade is a sham in our country today. It should be a rally for freedom not an orgey of denial and self aggrandisement.

    When will people wake up?

    Lori Burns Mayberry

Jody Chase really? He doesn't have the freedom of expression at a "Let Freedom Reign" parade???
The irony is seriously escaping you?
Oh dear. We're in serious trouble.
But that's nothing compared to the trouble our nation is in for sanctioning the shedding of innocent blood through abortion.
We're a nation of hypocrites who love child sacrifice.
    Repent with us.
