Local sheriff releases statement about Dallas shooting

    Sheriff Ian Parkinson

    Sheriff Ian Parkinson.

Shooting killed five officers, wounded seven

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson released a statement in response to the shooting that occurred in Dallas Thursday night.

The incident happened at a protest spurred by recent cases of African-American men being shot by law enforcement that have spurred a nation-wide debate over police use of force.

Five police officers were killed and seven others were injured in the ambush, according to CNN. Two civilians also were injured in the shootings, they report.

    Parkinson writes,

Last night marked a very sad time in Dallas and a very sad time in America. Last night five Dallas police officers were killed and seven officers were wounded. They were innocently gunned down, by at least one suspect reportedly stating he wanted to kill white police officers.

Earlier, there was a police shooting in Minnesota that led to protests in Dallas. I do not know what happened in Minnesota and I do not think that anyone here knows enough to pass judgement on what happened. I also recognize that there are police officers, doctors, lawyers, business owners, etc, that do wrong and deserve to be held accountable. Regardless of the facts and outcome of these cases, it does not justify the taking of any innocent life.

I hope that our political representatives don’t react and try to solve this with more weapon laws. We need to realize that this will not solve our problem and need to focus on the cause. We have a number of disturbed people out there and unfortunately this will continue until we start coming up with real ways to address their issues.

Today, five families are grieving the loss of their loved ones and six other families are praying that their loved one survives.

I would ask that you please think about these Dallas families and think about your local men and woman in law enforcement. We need your support!

    No one needs assault rifles.

The sad thing about this incident is that it was completely predictable. When you arm the general public to the level we have done it is just a matter of time before something like this happens. As far as Parkinson's comment it was completely inappropriate for him to inject gun control politics. Let's support our first responders and leave politics out of it. Parkinson's comment shows that he has political aspirations and that the Sherrifs office is just a stepping stone for him. It's time for a new Sherrif.

    Andie Scott

You obviously didn't listen to Your Presidents speech this morning then!!!! Sheriff Parkinsons statement was a hell of a lot better then the leader of our County's!

    Shan Tucker McCornack

Wow, Mr. Pauly your injecting more gun control politics than Sheriff Parkinson…and no it is not time for a new Sheriff!

    Joe Pauly

Andie Scott. That depends on where you stand on gun safety. Thanks you for your opinion.

    Joe Pauly

Shan Tucker McCornack. Yes! I am an advocate for gun safety legislation. It is my opinion that politics stay out of the sherrif's office. Parkinson's should be replaced by a non-partisan.

    Suzanne Landers-Grinley

Politics aside, other than the military who in the world needs automatic rifles?
You certainly don't need them for hunting! If you must own a gun for protection a hand gun should do the trick.

    Andie Scott

No Joe Pauly it doesn't depend on where I stand on gun safety!
Because from my statement I didn't say how I felt, I was addressing the fact that you jabbed him for injecting gun control into this. I believe he was saying he hopes that people, media and political parties don't use this as a platform like they have
the Presidents did what u got upset about and the speech he did the day or 2 before that said that we have an issue in this country with law enforcement using excessive force, when he knew the people were already riled up! Oh and wait yup he talked about gun control again!
When what our Predident should have said was
Yes we have seen cases of excessive force but by NO means do these incidents Represent the 99.9% of the amazing men and women that serve and protect us daily!! That we have a problem in this country with respect and accountability. That we can make changes peacefully not thru fighting a wrong with a wrong…
That he hope we can come together! But he obviously didn't say that ! So this week I feel words from a political leader were much more dangerous then anything !

    Joe Pauly

I disagree Andie Scott. Read your own statement. By inference you stated that you agree with Parkinson's view on guns (no gun safety legislation) and differ with "our" president's push for sensible gun safety legislation. It IS the presidents job to set the agenda. Not the sherrif's office. (And like it or not president Obama was reelected as our country's leader by 5 million votes). The majority of Sherrif's and police chiefs in this country support common sense gun safety legislation. Oh and by the way the shooter in Dallas was using an assault rifle with 223 ammo that can penetrate body armor.
My problem with Parkinson is that he was elected to a non-partisan office and has clearly decided to use his office to advance his political career. Mark my words. Parkinson and Dow are using their offices as stepping stones to advance to partisan offices. PROTECT OUR COPS BY DISARMING HATE!!!!

I stand beside our law enforcement. What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? This isn't about weapons this is about racisum of a black man hating white people and gunning for White Police Officers. Think who you would call if you hear a noise during the night or someone assults you. There are good white people, good black people, asian etc. and their are bad people in all races also. Thank Law Enforcement for answering your call. Without them most of us wouldn't be alive.

    Deborah Wiest

    I agree with Andie Scott.

    Deborah Wiest

    Right on!!!

    Deborah Wiest

No, just the criminals, in which there will never be any gun control law that will keep them out of the criminals' hands.

    Joe Pauly

Hi Deborah Wiest. I'm sorry ro hear that. Have a great day.

    Donna Wintergreen

I agree completely. Yes, we need more and more effective gun control laws.

    Andie Scott

It's all good Joe I think you miss what I was saying
