–Former Cal Poly football player, 20-year-old Cameron Marcel Akins was sentenced to serve five years and two months in state prison based on his felony convictions for attempted home invasion robbery in concert with the use of a firearm, residential burglary, and resisting a peace officer by use of force.

Each of the charges were for conduct during the same August 2014 incident that involved Akins and four other Cal Poly football players where the five burglarized and attempted to rob three students at Cal Poly’s Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.

Akins is now the final of the five former football players to be sentenced in this case. The other four defendants previously entered pleas and are now convicted of various crimes stemming from this incident. Akins’ sentence took into account his youthfulness, lack of criminal history, and his lead role in this case. He could have been sentenced up to a maximum sentence of 16 years for these charges.

“While it is sad for a young adult, who otherwise had a very promising future, to be sentenced to state prison, the criminal conduct in this case was very serious and must be handled accordingly,” said District Attorney Dan Dow. “The prison sentence sends a strong message to all in our community, including young adults, that choices to get involved in crime have life changing consequences.”

This case was investigated by the San Luis Obispo Police Department and prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Eric Dobroth.
