    – Cuesta College’s Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery is set to display the art work of acclaimed ceramic sculptor Juan D. Granados in “Pump Series: Parte Dos,” his first solo exhibition in California since 2000. The exhibit runs Nov. 4 – Dec. 9, with an opening reception on Fri, Nov. 4, from 4–7 p.m. Granados will discuss his work during an artist talk at 5:30 p.m.

Juan Granados is an internationally recognized ceramic sculptor from Lubbock, TX, where he teaches ceramics at Texas Tech University. A child of migrant farm workers, Granados’ upbringing influences both his works and medium of clay, providing a tactile connection to that which is earthy and organic.

“I spent my early years traveling with my family as migrant farm workers as we worked the fields throughout the southern half of the United States,” says Granados. “From these experiences, I learned the values of being observant of nature, and I learned to value the interdependence of nature.”

Says Miossi gallery coordinator Emma Saperstein, “The series of fifteen ‘pumps’ featured in ‘Pump Series: Parte Dos’ are both robotic and organic – existing in a space between machine and heartbeat. The exhibit will include large-scale drawings mirroring the ceramic sculptural forms in their strange abstraction of the mechanical and the alive.”

Since 1988, Granados has participated in nearly 100 national and international group exhibitions and 20 solo exhibitions. He has juried and co-juried both international and national exhibits. His work has been published in 18 surveys and textbooks, included 21 national and international journals, and he’s served as a visiting artist, guest lecturer and demonstrator at 21 venues across the United States.

The Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery is located in room 7170, on the San Luis Obispo campus of Cuesta College. It is open Mon-Fri, 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and the 1st and 3rd Saturdays from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call (805) 546-3202.
