Changing standards and older structures require an update

-The Paso Robles City Council approved updates to the city’s Transition Plan that is required by the American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) at the Tuesday meeting. A staff report to the city council said that the city’s 2008 plan needs to be updated and refined. According to the report, “The city has invested significant funds into ADA compliance projects over the last several years. However, because there was a lot of infrastructure built prior to the ADA standards, and because those standards have continued to change over time, additional compliance work remains.”

The plan identifies the areas where the city is not fully in compliance with current ADA standards, and identifies how the city plans to bring those areas into compliance over time. Updates to the plan will be developed with the assistance of California Joint Powers Insurance Authority (CJPIA), the City’s primary insurance provider, and Disability Access Consultants (DAC). The plan includes purchasing new software that has improved transition monitoring and reporting capabilities. The city’s 2016/17 Budget includes $100,000 for funding for the plan update.

The plan update was part of the city council consent calendar, which was unanimously approved.
