Cunningham bill to improve public safety signed into law

–Assemblymember Jordan Cunningham (R – Templeton) announced today that Governor Jerry Brown has signed into law his bill AB 1339, which would require a background check for individuals who have applied for a position other than a sworn peace officer within a law enforcement agency.
“It is imperative law enforcement agencies have the most up-to-date and accurate information about prospective employees,” Cunningham said. “This legislation will strengthen public safety by making sure these agencies are hiring trustworthy people who can potentially work in sensitive roles.”
AB 1339 carried the support of numerous law enforcement organizations, including the California State Sheriffs’ Association.
“Sheriffs are pleased to partner with Assembly Member Cunningham to enact legislation that helps us protect our strict hiring standards,” said California State Sheriffs’ Association President Bill Brown. “Non-sworn personnel in our offices have access to sensitive information and play a vital role in protecting the public safety. As law enforcement professionals, we will continue to reinforce the importance of high ethical behavior by those entrusted with the safety of our communities.”
Assemblymember Cunningham proudly represents all of San Luis Obispo County and a portion of Santa Barbara County, including the cities of Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Paso Robles, Grover Beach, Lompoc, Morro Bay, Pismo Beach, Templeton, San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, and surrounding communities.
