Mary P. Studer Schwartz dies at 90
Mary P. Studer Schwartz
-Mary P. Studer Schwartz, a longtime Paso Robles businesswoman, benefactor, civic booster and volunteer, died at her residence in San Luis Obispo on June 23, 2017, at the age of 90. Mary was born in New Jersey to Ulmont and Josephine Pastorino and moved to Paso Robles in 1953 with her husband Frank Studer. Her parents followed her to California and were also longtime residents of Paso Robles. For many years Mary and Frank owned Studer Realty. Mr. Studer died in 1983. In 2000, she wed Dale J. Schwartz,, brother of former Paso Robles Mayor Barney Schwartz. The two brothers were founders of the Paso Robles Golf and Country Club and owners of KPRL radio. Dale passed away in 2006.
Mary was a proud booster of Paso Robles and loyal supporter of many arts, educational and civic organizations. She served on the boards of the Cuesta College Foundation and the Paso Robles Recreation Enhancement Community (REC) Foundation and was a past president and Roblan of the Year of the Chamber of Commerce. She and her second husband were instrumental in the construction of the second permanent building at the Cuesta North Campus, and it was named in their honor, the Dale and Mary Schwartz Learning Resource Center. She also endowed numerous scholarships for Cuesta College students. She received the national Benefactor of the Year Award by the Council for Resource Development Region X for her extraordinary support to a community college, and Cuesta’s presidential award for distinguished volunteer service.
In addition, she was honored by the Paso Robles Art Association for her long and continuing support and received the Bob Alesi Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award for her work at the Paso Robles City Hall, the library, and Barney Schwartz Park. Other organizations that benefitted from her energy and enthusiasm include the Warbirds Museum, the Pioneer Museum, the Republican Women’s Club and the Downtown Paso Robles Main Street Association. Mary is survived by nieces: Judith Rutter of San Luis Obispo and Abigail Moynihan of Rowayton, Conn. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
