Assemblyman issues statement on school reopening plan

school reopening

–This week, Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham (R-San Luis Obispo) issued the following statement after voting in favor of AB 86, the state legislature’s new school reopening plan:

“Our local school districts have done a fantastic job moving quickly to reopen schools and get kids back into the classroom. Due to their proactive, hard work over the past several weeks, most of the kids throughout the Central Coast will be able to resume in-person learning this month.

“I agreed with school districts across the state that the prior version of this bill would have put all that hard work at risk. After witnessing the devastating impacts school closures have had on our kids’ mental health over the past year, I could not have supported a bill that would have made reopening more difficult.

“However, I believe that this version of the bill will incentivize more school openings and get our districts the resources they need to help our kids. Furthermore, it will reward Central Coast school districts for doing the right thing – getting our kids back into the classroom as quickly as possible.

“I know students are excited to get back to class. Let’s keep moving forward.”

AB 86 allocates $6.6 billion to school districts open prior to April 1. $4.6 billion is slated for learning loss remedies like summer school, and $2 billion is slated for reopening costs. The bipartisan bill passed the assembly and senate and is headed to the Governor for his signature.
