CHP to target impaired drivers during Labor Day weekend crackdown
Maximum Enforcement Period begins Friday
– The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is preparing for the upcoming Labor Day holiday by launching a statewide enforcement effort aimed at keeping roads safe. The enforcement period, known as a maximum enforcement period, will begin at 6:01 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, and continue through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2.
All available CHP officers will be on patrol to encourage safe driving and assist motorists. CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee emphasized the importance of making responsible choices, stating, “Everyone’s safety is our top priority, so make responsible choices. Drive sober, stay focused, and help keep our roads safe for all who use them. Your decisions behind the wheel can save lives – yours and others.”
Last year’s Labor Day enforcement period saw 38 fatalities in crashes across California. Nearly half of the vehicle occupants killed in crashes within CHP jurisdiction were not wearing seat belts. Additionally, CHP officers made 1,064 arrests for driving under the influence during the 78-hour enforcement period.
The CHP urges motorists to designate a sober driver or use public transportation. If you encounter a driver who appears impaired, call 9-1-1 immediately and provide the dispatcher with details such as the vehicle’s license plate number, location, and direction of travel.
