Paso Robles City Council meets virtually to discuss ongoing COVID-19 crisis
–The Paso Robles City Council held a virtual meeting Tuesday night by teleconferencing. The video showed slides, but the public could not see the elected council members or the city staff.
There was no pastor or religious leader present, so Mayor Steve Martin delivered an invocation, giving thanks for the opportunity to gather, “if only electronically.”
The council received a thorough report from Paso Robles Fire Chief Jonathon Stornetta. He described the city’s handling of the coronavirus crisis. Stornetta shared information from Tuesday’s County Health Department report, indicating there were 99 positive cases in San Luis Obispo County. He reported that 65 of those people have recovered. He says the North County has 27 active cases, but that includes cases in the unincorporated areas.
Stornetta says the Cal Poly Alternate Care Site is nearly ready to accommodate any overflow in the event all four county hospitals get filled with COVID-19 coronavirus patients. The care site, at the Rec Center, will provide 175 beds with expansion available to 900 beds.
City Councilman John Hamon raised questions about precautions taken by Paso Robles firefighters who call on COVID-19 cases. Chief Stornetta said that the crews take every precaution. He said they thoroughly clean and disinfect themselves and their uniforms before they re-enter their fire truck. Chief Stornetta said a crew in Long Beach did not take those precautions and 14 firefighters ended up in isolation.
Mayor Steve Martin also proclaimed April Sexual Assault Awareness Month and gave recognition to RISE in Paso Robles. The council will hold it’s next regular meeting on April 21, 2020, expected to be by teleconferencing again.
