City seeking community help for Salinas River cleanup
About 200 volunteers collect nearly one ton of debris annually
– The City of Paso Robles is calling for volunteers to take part in the annual Creeks to Coast Cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 20. The community-wide event will focus on removing trash and pollution from local waterways, including the Salinas River and neighborhood creeks.
Volunteers of all ages may participate at Larry Moore Park, 155 Riverbank Lane, or the Salinas Riverwalk parking lot behind Wendy’s, from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will collect litter, debris, and other pollutants to prevent them from entering vital waterways. Gloves, bags, and water will be provided. Volunteers are asked to wear comfortable clothing, sturdy shoes, and sun protection.
“Every piece of trash collected makes a difference,” said Kim Porter, Paso Robles stormwater program manager. “This is a chance for the community to directly protect our river, enhance wildlife habitat, and keep Paso Robles a clean and healthy community.”
The Creeks to Coast Cleanup is part of a statewide effort to protect California’s watersheds and oceans. Paso Robles joins other communities across the state for the event.
The Salinas River provides habitat for fish, amphibians, birds, beavers, and other wildlife. According to city officials, trash and debris can harm and kill local wildlife, and fall is a critical time to remove litter before winter rains wash it into the ocean.
On average, about 200 volunteers participate in Paso Robles’ cleanup effort, removing nearly one ton of trash and debris. Items collected in past years have included litter, mattresses, lawnmowers, shopping carts, and tires.
Volunteers may sign up in advance or simply arrive at either location on the day of the event. Free pizza, sodas, and water will be available for participants.
