–At around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night, California Highway Patrol, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff, Atascadero Fire, Santa Margarita Fire and San Luis Ambulance responded to an overturned car in the southbound lane of Highway 101 North of Highway 58. The driver had struck a 400 pound bear, killing it on impact, SLO Stringer reports. The driver was uninjured.

Deputies moved the bear to the shoulder of the freeway and Caltrans later disposed of it.

Bear strikes do sometimes occur along the 101 in the county, however most responders on the scene that evening could not remember such a large bear falling victim to a vehicle, the report said.

It seems at least one bear each year does not make it across 101 …..

I hit one that size, it sounds like that exact spot, going 70 in fast lane in a Nissan titan 2 1/2 years ago Labor Day night,, he jumped right in front of us, called 911, they said keep driving, looked like a big rig hit him right after us..really sad..I never believed the bear warning sign on 101, hit him within 500 yds of it..never heard of any friends even seeing bears round here in 20 years, but they are RIGHT by the Sign evidently;((any other 1/2 ton truck or car, we would have probably been dead or majorly injured, did $7k damage to the truck, but was still semi driveable..wonder what kid of car it was???…either way, sad… I never hit an animal in 30+ years, and then a bear in SLO county…WHOO,DA THUNK
