Santa Monica Launches First Official Bitcoin Office in the US

At the July 9 meeting of the Santa Monica City Council, the council unanimously approved a pilot program for a Santa Monica Bitcoin Office program at no cost to the city. The 7-0 decision reflects the city’s push to live up to its Silicon Valley tagline.

It was Vice Mayor Lana Negrete who requested this item, aiming to work with the Proof of Workforce Foundation nonprofit for this initiative. The new Santa Monica office is the first of its kind in the United States. Some of its goals include providing education on the popular cryptocurrency and helping the city’s economic recovery.

First introduced in 2009, Bitcoin has burst on the scene in recent years, becoming a legitimate payment option and one of the most popular investment assets. Individuals have started using it in their everyday lives, with many large companies accepting it as a form of payment. This includes Microsoft, AT&T, AMC, and many others.

Bitcoin has also emerged as a popular payment option when gambling online among many, including Californians. Since online casinos aren’t allowed to operate in the state, many of them have turned to offshore crypto casinos. Using cryptocurrencies is the safest way to play in a real money online casino due to the safety offered by blockchain technology.

With so much use, Bitcoin has grown significantly and continues to spark more and more interest. Even BlackRock CEO Larry Fink said that he’s a “major believer” in Bitcoin a few days ago. The investment company’s iShares Bitcoin Trust is currently the world’s largest fund of the popular cryptocurrency.

While its performance this year has been shaky, Bitcoin will stabilize and many have expressed their belief in the long-term value of the cryptocurrency.

Santa Monica’s city council has now voted in favor of its Bitcoin Office program which will further boost mainstream adoption of the digital currency. The move will help educate residents of Santa Monica on Bitcoin.

The adoption of the program is similar to the move El Salvador has made. The country has gained global attention due to President Nayib Bukele’s pro-Bitcoin policies. In fact, the country’s Bitcoin Office has congratulated the Santa Monica city council on making the decision in a post on its official X account.

As mentioned above, the city’s Bitcoin Office will be opened in partnership with the Proof of Workforce non-profit organization. Proof of Workforce is involved in the education-based adoption of Bitcoin as it aims to help unions, workers, and communities gain a better understanding of the digital currency.

The organization’s founder and president, Dom Bei, is from Santa Monica. A former firefighter, Bei has also supported the union in the self-custody of Bitcoin.

When talking about the Bitcoin Office program, Vice Mayor Negrete said that “this is not about the asset or the commodity, it is truly about educating.” She added that the council is constantly looking for ways to bring the city an economic recovery.

Negrete also said that the move will bring positive press to the city and aid in tourism as many Bitcoin enthusiasts will travel to Santa Monica. The city is currently acting as the host of the annual Pacific Bitcoin Festival which brings thousands of people intrigued by Bitcoin to Santa Monica each year.

However, Negrete added that the city isn’t telling anybody to invest in Bitcoin. Instead, it aims to help residents better understand how cryptocurrency works and help them make more informed decisions when investing or using Bitcoin.

Having the Bitcoin Office program will also help the city battle any potential scams involving Bitcoin. Last year, fraudsters targeted Latino investors claiming at least 30 local victims.

Councilmember Christine Parra said that although she’s “excited on a personal level to learn more and also be that innovative city, which we are.”

When it comes to public comments, they skewed from full-on support to warning other people about investing in Bitcoin. Local television producer Terence Michael referred to the Bitcoin network as a “wonderful playground” and said that the “big companies of tomorrow” will want to build on it.
