West Virginia beats Cal Poly at super regionals

Carson Turnquist pitching at West Virginia.

– At the NCAA Baseball Super Regionals in Morgantown, it was all West Virginia. The fans were all in for the Mountaineers. Same for the umpires and officials. Even the weather favored the home team. A storm delayed the second game for about 90 minutes in the 8th inning while officials prepared for the victory celebration. At the time, West Virginia led the decisive game 17-1.

After losing the first game Friday, 12-2, Cal Poly hoped for a dramatic turn around Saturday. So did former Bearcat Carson Turnquist, but again on Day 2 of the tournament, the calls by the home plate umpire gave the Mountaineers the benefit of the doubt on close pitches. The WVU hitters waited for a fat one down the middle, and they hit them well.

After winning seven in a row, Carson Turnquist was knocked out of the game in the second inning.

The Mustangs ultimately lost 17-1, so West Virginia gets the invite to Omaha’s College World Series.

Next up for Mustang players like Carson Turnquist, catcher Ryan Tayman and center fielder Casey Murray Jr., the MLB Draft. Those three and several others are expected to go early in the draft. Then, Coach Larry Lee and Cal Poly will reload for another season after their best season ever.

It ended with the West Virginia fans singing, “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” But next season, that song will be inspiration and motivation for another excellent season.

In 2026, the Mustangs finished with a record of 22-8 in the Big West Conference and 39-24 overall. They were Big West Tournament Champions and Regional winners at UCLA in Westwood.
