Capps announces grants for local airports

Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara, announced on Monday grants totaling $1.4 million to improve runways at San Luis Obispo County airports through the Department of Transportation.

The first, for the Paso Robles Municipal Airport, is for nearly $1.3 million. The grant will fund the construction phase of rehabilitation for the existing pavement on two taxiways that have reached the end of their service life. The work includes the application of a slurry seal and installation of new pavement markings, along with earthwork and grading of the drainage next to the main runway.

The second grant, for San Luis County Regional Airport, is for $133,258. The grant will pay for runway incursion markings that are needed to meet federal acquisition regulations and will include the installation of surface painted hold signs and enhanced taxiway center lines at all taxiway and runway intersections.

“Our local airports are very important to our local business community and the thousands of people who travel through them each day,” Capps said. “I am proud to announce this award, and look forward to seeing the changes and upgrades that will help keep our airports safe and bustling with activity.”

“Paso Robles Airport is strongly supported by the local community and the City of Paso Robles,” said Paso Robles Mayor Duane Picanco. “The City’s commitment to the airport is evident by its continued participation in the Federal Grant Funding program and the many projects completed which improve and expand our service to the local area and to the flying public.”

“By completing the installation of the markings, Airport Management anticipates a greater level of safety of operations for aircraft, pilots and passengers that use the airport, said Craig Piper, San Luis Obispo County’s Assistant General Manager for Airport Services. “The markings are designed to create a greater level of situational awareness for pilots to avoid potentially entering a runway without authorization and into the path of another aircraft.”

Last month, Capps visited the SLO County Airport to meet with its new general manager, as well as to help celebrate the airport’s 75th anniversary.
