113 PRHS students headed to Skills USA State Competition

From The Vine issue 116

–Paso Robles High School (PRHS), with 40 other schools in the Central Coast and Central Valley completed the 2019 Region 2 Conference Feb. 23rd.

The results of the Conference allow 113 PRHS students to attend the 2019 California Skills USA State Conference in Ontario, CA. The Conference will be April 25-28.

Thirty-eight students were awarded Gold Medals, Twenty-seven awarded Silver Medals and twenty-eight were awarded Bronze Medals. Many of the contests are teams of two to three students, some are four students. Most contests are individual competitors. Students may be advancing to the state conference who did not medal, however placed high enough in the contests to allow them to advance. Chapter 211 is one of a few chapters with over 80 students competing at the state level.

PRHS Skills USA Chapter is financed by Business & Industry partners. The community has successfully partnered with SkillsUSA Chpt. 211 for the past sixteen years. Expenses have included equipment and clothing, tools and materials, transportation and hotel expenses. Students also contribute financially to their expenses. PRHS SkillsUSA Advisors say students need to understand there are financial  responsibilities every employee and business owner must bare to expand their horizons in the world of work. The cost to send the State Conference is approximately $450 per student. They ask students to fund raise a portion of their expenses: $250 Those who “work and think hard” in the state conference may become gold
medalists. Those students have the opportunity to advance to the National Conference in Louisville, Kentucky in June 2019. The cost per student for National conference is nearly $2,000 per student. They have asked these students to fundraise approximately $450 of this amount. Their challenge to the community is to continue their assistance to Skills USA Chapter 211 to finance the balance of these costs.

They have four levels of contribution. Gold Sponsors = $1000 or more, Silver Sponsors =$500 – $999, Bronze Sponsors = $250 – $499 and Sponsors of Recognition are $100 – $249. They have not ever let a student stay home who could not afford the cost of this life changing experience. However, they also highly encourage them to try and find several sponsors who are willing to contribute to their portion of the cost.
