230-acre prescribed burn scheduled at Camp San Luis Obispo

There will be a 230-acre prescribed burn at Camp San Luis Obispo between May 26 and May 30, starting at approximately 10 a.m., weather and burn conditions permitting, Cal Fire reports.

The burn will be on grasslands on and near the base’s firing ranges.Camp San Luis Obispo sign

Cal Fire and the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department respond to accidental grass fires at the base when the grass dries and the military training occurs at the firing ranges. By conducting this hazard reduction burn they hope to provide the base with a safe firing range for training and keep resources available for dispatch during peak fire season.

Fire equipment assigned to this burn include six fire engines, two hand crews, one bulldozer and several supervisors, all from local fire stations.

People in Chorro Valley and San Luis Obispo City may see smoke from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from this prescribed burn, Cal Fire says.

The prescribed burn is being planned and coordinated with the San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District and the California Air Resources Board in order to minimize the smoke impacts on surrounding communities.
