25k awarded to People’s Self-Help Housing college support program

–Peoples’ Self-Help Housing’s (PSHH) efforts to support low-income students in their dreams of higher education recently received a $25,000 boost from The Community Foundation of San Luis Obispo County to focus on empowering Latina women and girls.

The College Enrollment for Latinas Entering Bright Rewarding Educations (CELEBRE) is a recent extension of PSHH’s existing College Club, a site-based educational program that staffs full-time advisors who work with students to equip them with the skills and knowledge to attend a higher education institution. In addition to the Club’s basic support through workshops and assistance with applications for admission and financial aid, CELEBRE will delve deeper in an effort to empower low-income Latinas to overcome gender inequities and stereotypes that may prevent them from succeeding in higher education.

“Education is a key building block for a successful future for our children,” said John Fowler, PSHH President/CEO. “Thanks to this support from The Community Foundation, our Education Department’s new CELEBRE program can provide young women and girls the strong blocks they need to build their own bright and successful futures.”

The Community Foundation grant is being provide through its Women’s Legacy Fund which has given more than $300,000 since 2003 in support of a broad spectrum of issues affecting women and girls in San Luis Obispo County from basic needs and education to physical and mental health. For the 2019 grant period, the fund supports “programs or projects which empower girls with the skills, knowledge, and support to overcome gender inequities, stereotypes and build resilience,” according to The Community Foundation’s website.

PSHH’s site-based educational programming is offered to schoolchildren and college students through its 10 on-site learning centers located at its rental properties from Paso Robles to Carpinteria. After-school tutoring and homework help is provided to schoolchildren grades K-8 plus day camps and field trips through the school year and during seasonal breaks. For older children, College Club provides support and guidance from the application through the graduation process. For more details on PSHH’s Education Department, visit www.pshhc.org.
