Track meet founder Stuart Ross to serve as Grand Marshal

– Local students in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to register for the 32nd annual Taco Bell Track Meet to be held at the Paso Robles High School track on Saturday, April 8 from 8 a.m. until noon. This annual event features run, jump, and throw competitions geared toward all ages and abilities of elementary age participants.

Students can register to take part in several events including a long jump, turbo javelin throw, and 50, 100, 200 and 400-meter races. All students are invited to enter three events during the meet. Everyone who participates will receive a collapsible water bottle to commemorate the day and a ribbon for every event. Prizes will be awarded for individual events as well as trophies for the winning school boys’ and girls’ relays.

The morning festivities begin with a welcome from event Grand Marshal, Stuart Ross, who started the meet 32 years ago as the Director of Community Services for the City of Paso Robles. Watching the meet grow and change has been rewarding for Ross who says he started the meet because he saw a “huge need for this type of activity,” in the Paso Robles community. “I’m extremely proud to be honored as the grand marshal for this year’s meet,” said Ross. “I’m also very proud that the Taco Bell Track Meet has continued for the past 32 years.”

Following the welcome, there will be a student parade around the track and the traditional school mascot race which will be run, hopped or galloped by mascots representing many of the participating schools. During the meet parents and fans will have the opportunity to submit shout-outs to track meet participants to be announced periodically throughout the course of the event for a $1 fee. Students are encouraged to wear their school colors.

“The Taco Bell Track Meet is a wonderful collaboration between Taco Bell, the Paso Robles Community Services Department, and our local elementary schools,” commented Lynda Plescia, Recreation Manager for the City of Paso Robles. “We encourage all children to come out and represent their school during this event that focuses on friendly competition, school spirit and most of all fun!”

Registration for the Taco Bell Track Meet is $10 per participant. Early registration will happen Monday, March 13 through Friday, March 24 and includes a free Taco Bell Track Meet t-shirt.

Registration forms are available at many area schools and online at Paso Robles Recreation Services. To register, students may return their completed form to their school or to the Paso Robles Recreation Services registration desk at Centennial Park, 600 Nickerson Drive, Monday through Friday between noon and 5 p.m. For additional information about this event visit the website, or call  (805) 237-3988.
