Rainbow trout are a popular freshwater game fish known for their vibrant colors and adaptability. Native to the western United States, they thrive in cold, clear lakes and rivers. Anglers prize them for their fight when hooked and their versatility in various cooking methods.
The department oversees wildlife conservation and management throughout the state. The agency is responsible for fish stocking, habitat protection, and enforcing fishing and hunting regulations. Its mission is to maintain California’s biodiversity while ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.
Anglers are reminded that anyone 16 years or older must have a valid California fishing license. The daily limit for trout is five per person, with no size restrictions.
