Vineyard Elementary School (VES) student John Nicholson was honored at the Feb. 12 Templeton School District board meeting for his winning essay in the Daughters of the American Revolution annual writing contest. According to Betsy Beatty of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the 5th grader not only won at the local chapter level, but went on to win at the district level.

Nicholson was presented with a certificate and a check worth $50. The topic for this year’s writing contest was, “If you were a child passing through Ellis Island, what would you experience?”
