85-year-old Los Osos man in critical condition after bicycle accident in North County

–85-year-old Los Osos man Wade Akle suffered major injuries after a medical injury while riding his bike occurred on Monday, according to California Highway Patrol.

Akle was riding his BLIX Electric bicycle Eastbound on Highway-41 just East of the Salinas River Bridge. (Just East of Atascadero city limits). According to a friend that was riding with him, they were traveling along at approximately 15 mph. Akle suffered an unknown medical emergency and fell from his bicycle. Due to his medical emergency, Akle was unable to brace himself from the fall.

Akle was wearing a protective bicycle helmet. However, he struck his face onto the paved shoulder where he sustained major head trauma. Akle was transported to Sierra Vista Hospital by San Luis Ambulance where he was immediately taken into surgery for his injuries.

As of Wednesday, he was still in the Intensive Care Unit @ Sierra Vista Hospital.
