911 turns 50-years-old

–The emergency system that has saved countless lives is celebrating a landmark birthday as 911 turns 50 years old today, according to the Paso Robles Police Department.

On February 16, 1968, Alabama Speaker of the House, Mr. Rankin Fite, made the first 911 call from the Haleyville City Hall. From that small beginning, 911 technology has become more sophisticated in response to consumer expectations. Each advancement has improved our nation’s ability to get better, more reliable information to first responders so they can do their job of saving lives and property.

Remember, if you need to call 911, the first thing the dispatcher will need from you is your location. Make sure to have an address, landmark or intersection ready. It is actually harder to find your location if you call from your cell phone, according to the police department.
