Meeting on proposed mental health hospital Tuesday

A new behavioral health, drug treatment, and memory care hospital is being proposed to be built in Templeton on Las Tablas Road, near Twin Cities Hospital and community members are invited to a forum to hear more about it. A “meet and greet” is scheduled with Mark Schneider of VizionHealth on Tuesday, Nov. 11 from 5-7 p.m. in the Templeton Community Center, 601 S. Main St., Templeton.

The forum is an opportunity to meet both the developer and the architect of the proposed facility. The project is described as a facility that would bring in patients from around the central coast with about 90 beds and a staff of up to 200. The patients would be short-term, 5–10 days, in the locked facility.

The Templeton Chamber of Commerce sent a notice of the meeting to its members saying,” While this facility would bring career level jobs to Templeton, fill a need for this medical service in our county, and be appropriately located in the medical zone of our town, it also poses some potential issues, including need for fire and police response, increased traffic on Las Tablas, neighborhood security and the resources to serve the visitors and families of these patients in their expected 5-10 day stays.”

We so badly need such a facility in our County but agree that there are concerns locally. I plan on being there to hear both sides.

If you live in Templeton, please go to the meeting and reject it. Once these people are released from the mental health hospital, if they cannot get someone to pick them up, they will just be released into our town. Therefore we will have a lot of homeless in the area. Even though I do not live near there, I have friends with kids that live blocks away, and if I were them I wouldn't want to let my kids run around in the quiet cul de sac anymore in case they're wandering down the street. This will NOT be good for our town! Attend and reject!

It did not say criminals, typical central coast idots that think you are better than everyone else

The concern is over the hospital taking in 5250 patients from other counties. The 5250s are people who were 5150s, held for 72 hours mental observation because they were a danger to themselves or others. When they can't be stabilized, they are sent to a facility for 12 to 30 days until they are stabilized and are then released, usually to friends or family in the community.

Some of these patients are the mentally ill homeless and they would be released in Templeton, a town that has no homeless facilities, with a few days of medication. Since these people will be coming from a tri-county area, with no home to return to, they will be part of a new and growing mentally ill homeless population for Templeton to deal with. This is the concern that the proposed hospital needs to confirm, deny, or explain.

    Shawn Parrish

Any hospital has a 5150 ward so why you think these people that need help are not from this sad area, just cause you dont know them means they are not your neighbors already?

    Lynne Gamble

Because the proposed mental hospital supposedly said they would be taking 5250 patients from a Tri-County area–three counties. Google California 5150. I don't think you understand the system. 5150 people go to a county facility for a 72 hour psychiatric hold. Hospitals don't have 5150 wards.

Not every hospital has a 5150 ward. The only place for 5150 is at the old General Hospital. Get informed before you start posting untruths.
People who are a danger to themselves or others will be initially taken to an emergency room. Then transferred to SLO.

Im weighing in on the risks versus benefits……Im all in. Treatment is better than incarceration….or hospitalization for others.
