If only kids couldent get there hands on them this wouldent be a problem…. Glad he is making a recovery.

Are these issues happening because of the user is somehow modifying the vaping device? Are all types of vaping devices being affected or are they just the ones that looks like a box? I use the small vaping pens. if not I would like to know if all types are being affected. I read this issue too much online recently, and would thank anybody who can offer a reply,
Getting what he deserves lol
It's not the ecig that blows up. Its the lipo battery. I wish reporters would get there story right. They are trying to make ecigs look bad.
That is in no way the goal of the article. Yes, the battery was the source of combustion, but the entire device exploded.
That is completely unnecessary.
Christine Butler No, it can't happen to "anyone at any time." This happens to people who use improperly vented mechanical mods (a box or tube that doesn't incorporate any place for gas to escape if a battery fails), AND who build their own sub-ohm coils that exceed the discharge rate of the battery they're using.
Those are the people who this happens to. They do this so they can exhale gigantic clouds of fog. They are either very careful and keep a multimeter handy, or they're like this teen, who probably never even heard of ohm's law and didn't know that his device required simple math to use safely.
A 17-year-old shouldn't be vaping in the first place, and nobody should be selling vaping items to minors. It's not a "safe alternative to smoking" at all. It's merely trading on dumb addiction for another.
Wow. You just sound ignorant and rude.
It's mainly the mods
Dana Marie
It's like when a person burns themselves with a cigarette. They shouldn't be smoking in the first place.
I'm not ignorant nor rude. if you can't handle other opinions. You're in the wrong place.
The "kid", who unfortunately had this accident was 17. Not 14. Months from being a legal adult. Le'st not play the "think of the children" card on this one. He's basically an adult. I had my own house and a full time job at 17 cause I started school early and graduated early. I've known 13 year olds that smoked and that's wrong. But 5 years and a few months are two extremely different ages. The explosion is extremely unfortunate, but it could happen to anyone, whether that are 17 or 71. Especially if they are modifying they're vapes and don't know how.
I think partially it's because a lot tend to use lithium cells and if lithium cells aren't treated properly
This vid is an induced failure with explosive results (Skip to 0:48 for the fireworks)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2BGtUxR_2xE
And this is a real world example of a failure (most likely a damaged/abused cell) after exposure to water.

I totally agree with you Tristan Miller great comment
Please people if you would like to leave a comment please try and leave positive comments to help Daniel McClelland recovery please refrain from posting I need negative comments this is to help support Daniel recovered please refrain from posting negative comments this is to help support Daniel recover recover
Sue the company make them pay your bills and more!!!!
Harsh of you to only write something like that. Are u a human with feelings?!
Mike Strawbridge yes it can happen to anyone anytime that's how underage kids get cigs or alcohol or ppl buy illegal drugs
Ur retarted and need to get out of ur bubble
Christine I can understand your family is going through a lot dude to the event that happened with your son but you can't say that age isent the problem because it even states on every device packaging that it is not intended for minors 1 because most kids are not knowledgeable enough to understand how to safely use a e-cigarette or Vape I have had similar things happen to me not as severe but it was because I was not using it correctly and I know the risks of doing so. So yes age is a big factor with these. If your not old enough to use it you shouldn't be and if you are then you should study how to use it safely so tho gs like this don't happen.
Why would a 17 year old be allowd to vape in the first place and who even bought it for him? Sounds like a parenting error. Even if they didnt buy it for him im sure they knew he vaped.
He shouldn't be smoking/ vaping in the first place, ugh! I totally agree with Holly Wilder
Melissa Cunningham harsh but true. You have to be human to know right from wrong. Yes, it sad that he got hurt but it's always fun till someone gets hurts, ugh!
Christine Butler according to what people are saying it's improper use. With that being said, education and not to be for minors use…

It is safer than smoking. The problem is, as seems to be the case with a lot of these explosions, is a lack of knowledge on battery safety and how to use the device properly. It's not the device exploding, it's the battery. And if you don't know the signs of when an 18650 battery is in thermal runaway, you get hurt pretty badly.
And if it's found he was using the device/battery incorrectly? He's on the hook for medical bills and lawyer's fees.
If it has an LCD screen it won't vent.
Or I guess LED. basically anything that has a computer chip in it is safe. Some people use a battery in a metal box or tube, and those are only as safe as the person using it.
You can't t sue a gun maker because you blow your face off, same applies to vapes, you cant sue because of your lack of knowledge on the proper use and and saftey of a certain product.
Christine Butler Better get rid of your cell phone as it can blow up in your pocket at any place and any time.
I want to know what type of device, charger, and battery he was using, and where the battery was purchased. Battery safety is the first rule to vaping and there are many fakes and shoddy batteries out there without the right capabilites. If you don't know about the authenticity or capability of the battery, you should not be using it. Also, remember that lithium ion batteries have exploded in many devices inlcluding cell phones, laptops, "hoverboards", and many more. There is much science behind a li-ion battery and one should heed caution as to what manufacturer is producing these batteries as even little dust particles can cause explosions like this. Regardless of all of the above, I hope he recovers well.
Jason Wilkes It can still vent. The chip protects against many things, but it can't read your batteries capabilities, and if your battery is not capable of delivering the proper amperage, then you have a problem. People should heed caution as to what manufacturer is making their battery, if the battery is authentic, and the amperage capabilites. It is left up to the end user to be an educated consumer and practice safety. Not saying that the above kid was not doing these things, and I wish him a full and quick recovery, but we have absolutely no details in this article to be sure of the circumstances.
Li-po, Life-po, Li-ion, etc. They've been blowing up for years, in laptops, in phones, and recently in the new fad "hoverboards". Luckily with vapes, you can actually source your own batteries, therefore it's up to the consumer to determine the authenticity and capability of the cell. I've never once heard of an authentic battery venting in a regulated mod that is rated for the proper amperage draw. These articles always fail to make mention of the components and circumstances that lead up to an explosion.
Which company?
Christine Butler When did I ever say age mattered? I literally explained the simple physics that cause these failures. No, it can't happen to "any one at any time." I never said age mattered — ignorance does. I was building, soldering, and testing electrical devices before I was 11 years old.
Either you are arguing a different point than that it can happen "to any one, at any time" — or your reading comprehension is horrible.
Lori Sellers you are 100% wrong and its been proven to be at least 95% healthier than smoking. Go ask the European union. This isn't a vape issue, this is a battery issue. Just like how those new hoverboards have been exploding and how some cellphones catch fire. You should do more research before spewing own the wrong info because you are just a tool by the tobacco companies at this point. I'm sure all the info you know about ecigs comes from fox news. A toaster is dangerous if used incorrectly, a wall outlet is dangerous when used incorrectly.
Was this device maybe altered in anyway that could happen and tryin to sue is out the window
Max Bradley Daniel is not my son he is a one of my good friends younger brother and I still stick with what I said that age doesn't make any fucking difference you even said you have had issues using vapes and how old are you so shut the fuck up plz the family has had enough of everyone blaming Daniel saying that he didn't know what he was doing he has been doing it for a long time so he can stop smoking cigarettes and to the person who said its a partnering error fuck your too cause she didn't agree with it at first but what she did agree on was to get Daniel to stop smoking cigarettes so everyone stop judging if you don't know the true story
Somebody please find out and post exactly what model of pen he was using and what battery.
