Six injured after vehicles collide on Highway 1
Editor’s note: story was corrected Wednesday, June 22 at 9.30 a.m.
According to a California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Patrick Seebart, the original press release incorrectly stated the driver of the Ford carrying five people caused the collision on Highway 1 near Arroyo De La Cruz. The Mazda, driven by Jacob Vita of Coronado (27), was traveling southbound and crossed over the double yellow lines and attempted to pass four cars that were ahead of him. The Mazda collided with the Ford while the Mazda was on the wrong side of the double yellow lines.
Original story posted June 20:
Head-on collision reported north of Arroyo De La Cruz on Sunday

A 2016 Mazda with a single driver traveling southbound between 50 and 55 mph collided with a 2016 Ford carrying five people, all from Hawaii, traveling northbound at about 55 mph. The driver of the Mazda was trying to pass four vehicles over double yellow lines when it collided with the Ford which braked but was unable to avoid striking the front of the vehicle.
The driver of the Mazda was identified as 27-year-old Jacob Vita of Coronado. The driver of the Ford was identified as Melekai Jenson, 32, of Haiku, and the passengers were identified as 29-year-old Elyssa Polsky of Makawao, 50-year-old Amy Polsky of Haiku, 29-year-old Moana Jenson of Haiku, and 6-year-old Dior Coleman of Makawao, HI.
Vita received a broken left foot, right ankle and head injury. The five people in the ford all reported neck, shoulder and back pain.
Drugs and or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this collision. This collision is still under investigation.
Sometimes all it takes is STUPIDITY!
Go back to Hawaii. Stay there.
I'm confused. The other article says the MAZDA crossed the double line in an attempt to pass four vehicles. Which is it?
A CHILD was hurt in this. No one needs to start with the "go back to Hawaii crap"
Before you run your mouth read the newest article that got it correct. The Mazda crossed the double yellow trying to pass four cars. He nearly killed five people.
The Mazda was the driver who caused the accident. Thank you for your response.
Ingrid Jen I think it should be corrected. Information like this should be 100% accurate. I am friends with Melekai on Facebook and seen her posts and how much she loves her family/Dior.
The ford did not cross the line. The California native in the Mazda crossed a double causing everyone to be ingured. This has nothing to do with Hawaii or our driving.
Thank you for alerting us to the error. The original press release sent from CHP was incorrect. The story has been updated.
I agree! So many mean , prejudiced people in this world!! If you have nothing kind to say it is better to keep your mouth shut!!! Of course the blame is with the driver that crossed over the double yellow line, what difference does it make where all souls involved are from!!! The driver should never try to pass so many cars at once !! IMO
What a nasty man, John Barrett! I don't know who you think you are. These are US Citizens just like the rest of us. Bigoted much? I feel so bad for the people in the pick-up. What a scary situation to be in.
