North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA, has endorsed Measure J, a voter proposition for all areas of San Luis Obispo County that would improve roads and transportation, the organization announced this week.Measure j endoresment

“Traffic backups and potholes are all too common in San Luis Obispo County,” the organization said on its website. “But relief could happen soon if voters approve Measure J on November 8.”

Measure J is a half-percent sales tax, levied for nine years, which will provide an estimated $225 million per year. The locally controlled funds would be used exclusively to improve roads and transportation in San Luis Obispo County.

Every city council in the county, along with the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors, has approved the project Investment Plan to be funded by Measure J on the November ballot. AAA, a not-for-profit federation of clubs that has been advocating for motorists since 1902, supports Measure J because it is an investment plan that addresses high priority transportation needs in the county. It also includes a taxpayer’s oversight committee and annual independent CPA audits that will ensure the funds remain local and are spent in a manner approved by voters.

Measure J will also provide local matching funds needed to bring more federal and state transportation dollars to the county. In addition to maintaining roads, measure will relieve congestion and enhance traffic safety–issues AAA has long fought for.

Since its founding, AAA has been an advocate for the motorist and traveler, continually lobbying for driver and passenger rights, fair laws and safer vehicles and roads.
