Accident on Highway 41 leaves one dead, one injured

Driver struck a patch of black ice Friday morningwoman crashes car

–Kelly Johnson, a 22-year-old San Luis Obispo resident, has died as a result of a collision that occurred on Jan. 1 at 8:10 a.m. on Northbound Highway 41, one mile south of the San Luis Obispo/Kern County line near Cholame. The driver of the car, 44-year-old Kymberly Sulamo, was transported to Sierra Vista Hospital with moderate injuries, and was later released, according to California Highway Patrol.

Sulamo was driving a 2005 Nissan Titan on Northbound Highway 41 near the county line at approximately 50 mph, when she struck a patch of black ice, causing her to lose control of the truck. The truck left the roadway and continued down a steep embankment rolling over several times and finally coming to rest on its wheels. Johnson sustained fatal injuries, due to the fact that she was not wearing her seatbelt, according to CHP.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the collision, CHP says.
