Update: Driver involved in auto theft, hit and run, was a minor

Update posted July 26, 12:45 p.m.

17-year-old was driving on a suspended license

–Additional details have been released regarding the felony DUI hit-and-run incident that occurred Tuesday.

Two CHP officers were working a fixed post in front of the Mid State Fair Grounds when a citizen yelled out that his car was being stolen (pointing to a Pontiac that was being driven out of the fair parking lot). The two officers entered their patrol vehicle and tried to follow the stolen vehicle. The officers moved their patrol vehicle directly behind the stolen vehicle near 16th Street and Spring Street in Paso Robles.

The driver of the stolen Pontiac (a 17-year-old juvenile), saw the patrol vehicle and quickly accelerated through the intersection at 16th Street and Spring Street and caused a collision between the stolen Pontiac and a Black Ford Explorer. The driver of the Pontiac continued through the intersection and drove into the Bank of America parking lot near that intersection. CHP Officers followed the Pontiac into the parking lot where the driver of the Pontiac then crashed the front of the Pontiac into a retaining wall. CHP Officers quickly took the 17-year-old driver into custody. The 17-year-old was booked into Juvenile Detention on a number of charges including: Felony DUI, Felony DUI with a Blood Alcohol Concentration above .08%, Grand Theft of a Vehicle, Felony Hit and Run, Driving on a suspended license, and resisting arrest.

The Paso Robles Police Department is conducting the traffic collision investigation, and the Templeton CHP Office is conducting the rest of the investigation. This investigation is ongoing.

Alcohol possibly a factor in Mid-State Fair car theft, injury collision

Photo from CHP.

–On Tuesday, at approximately 5:17 p.m., The California Highway Patrol (CHP) told Paso Robles Police Department dispatcher they were attempting to locate a car recently stolen from the Mid-State Fair parking lot. CHP ultimately reported the stolen vehicle had collided with a car passing south through the intersections of 16th and Spring Streets. The Paso Robles Police Department and Department (PRPD) and Department of Emergency Services (PRES) responded and located an injury collision at the intersections of 16th and Spring Streets, Paso Robles.

Emergency personnel arrived on scene and found a black Ford Explorer with major front-end damage in the middle of the intersection; the driver of the SUV was suffering from moderate leg injuries. The driver was transported to Twin Cities Community Hospital via ambulance. The suspect was at rest in the Bank of America parking lot on the west side of the intersection. The suspect did not appear to have any injuries.
PRPD officers contacted CHP officers and determined they had arrested a suspect in connection with the collision and car theft.

Because this collision occurred within the City of Paso Robles, the PRPD is conducting the collision portion of the investigation; CHP is coordinating the investigation/arrest surrounding the vehicle theft from the Mid-State Fair (state property).

The collision remains under investigation; alcohol appears to be a contributory factor. The Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services, San Luis Ambulance, and California Highway Patrol personnel all assisted with this investigation.
