Anthony Kalvans to retire from San Miguel CSD board

Anthony Kalvans.
– San Miguel Community Services District (CSD) Director Anthony Kalvans announced his retirement from the board effective November 2024, following the board meeting on June 29. Kalvans also stated he will be leaving the Republican Party and switching to Decline to State.
Kalvans, the youngest serving member of the CSD, has completed three terms on the board. He began his community involvement at age 10, volunteering with the San Miguel Lions Club. In high school, he organized a 9-11 memorial project. He was elected to the CSD board at age 19, serving his first year as president.
During his tenure, Kalvans focused on modernization and reforms, including downtown revitalization and environmental initiatives. He advocated for transparency and budgetary reforms, expanded public safety, and positioned the district as a regional player. Under his leadership, the district became state-certified for transparency, created its first strategic plan, and secured millions in grant funding for infrastructure improvements. A new sheriff’s office is set to open in San Miguel, thanks to a partnership with the fire department.
Kalvans’ work received recognition from the nonpartisan Strong Towns movement, which promotes local community empowerment.
Despite his achievements, Kalvans says he faced challenges, including death threats and stalking, some from his own party. Disillusioned by internal conflicts within the Republican Party, Kalvans said, “I’m not sure how the party is going to win elections by fighting amongst itself over who is more Republican, especially in a state like California.” He emphasized the importance of working with people from all political backgrounds for transparent and empowering governance.
Reflecting on his time in San Miguel, Kalvans expressed gratitude to his colleagues and the community. “It has been an amazing opportunity to work with everyone including staff, board members, our nonprofits, and business community. I know that when we find common ground, San Miguel is at its best,” he said. Kalvans plans to focus on regional work and new personal opportunities. He encourages future leaders to love San Miguel, recognize its potential, and avoid divisive actions.
