Dawn Ortiz-Legg, a Democrat, has announced an endorsement of the San Luis Obispo Firefighters Local 3523 for her campaign for the 35th District State Assembly.

“As a first time candidate for office, I know the importance of receiving support from local groups like the San Luis Obispo firefighters,” said Ortiz-Legg. “I am honored that they are supporting my campaign and look forward to working with them as the race continues.”

The seat is currently held by Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian. He is leaving the office next year and currently running for US Congress.

Ortiz-Legg currently serves on several local boards and commissions including the Board of Directors of the San Luis Obispo County Economic Vitality Corporation (EVC) working to attract new businesses, the Citizens Transportation Advisory Committee of San Luis Obispo Council of Governments, the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival and the Cuesta College Sustainability Center.

Ortiz-Legg volunteers with her father’s nonprofit I Care International, Inc. I Care was formed over 25 years ago with the mission of improving the quality of life of those in need by providing eye care services. I Care has brought vision professionals and scores of volunteers to both Latin America and the United States to provide tens of thousands of people with free eye care, medications and glasses.

Ortiz-Legg attended the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) where she earned a Masters in International Public Policy with a focus on climate change and technology.

Oritz-Legg is raising her daughter in San Luis Obispo. She is running against at least one other candidate, Republican Jordan Cunningham.

The 35th Assembly District includes the communities of Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Grover Beach, Guadalupe, Lompoc, Morro Bay, Paso Robles, Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Maria.
