Historic city hall will celebrate patriotism and light exterior lighting

— Atascadero’s downtown comes alive at least four times a year when Atascadero Main Street Association hosts its quarterly art and wine tour. The next Atascadero Art & Wine Tour will feature not only local art and wine, but also the newly added exterior lighting of the historic City Administration Building on Friday, Sept. 11, as well as a flyover by Estrella Warbirds Freedom Flight.

The quarterly art and wine tour will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. throughout downtown Atascadero. Atascadero Main Street Association will sell wristbands for unlimited wine tasting and a commemorative wine glass for $15. The wristbands will begin being sold on the corner of El Camino Real and Entrada Avenue on Friday at 4 p.m.

“We started doing tie-dye over a year ago but have only recently decided to sell it,” said Jenni Shiers who owns 805 Vintage Thrift and 805 Tye Dye. “Tie dying is a long process and the key is using the correct water temperature for each step as well as high quality dye.”

The event started in May 2008 as the Atascadero Art Tour and encompassed businesses throughout the entire city. The event went under the umbrella of the main street organization in 2009 and changed its named to the Atascadero Art & Wine Tour soon after.

I love the Atascadero art and wine tour,” Atascadero resident Michele Coombs said. “It gives me the chance to go into the local shops and buy local.”

The city of Atascadero will start its patriotic tribune program at 5 p.m.with a flyover by Estrella Warbirds Freedom Flight and a patriotic musical performance. From 5:30 to 7 p.m., evening tours of historic city hall will be given by Atascadero Historical Society, along with rides on Atascadero City Fire Department’s antique fire truck. At 8 p.m., there will be a patriotic candle lighting ceremony in Sunken Gardens at the city hall. As the art and wine tour concludes at 8:30 p.m., there will be a countdown to the unveiling of the city hall’s new exterior lighting. Atascadero Mayor Tom O’Malley and PG&E will flip the light switch.
