Atascadero Cemetery District updates flower policy

District will begin a gravesite clean-up to align with the updated policy on Jan. 6

    – The Atascadero Cemetery District has updated the District Flower Policy, with changes adopted on Nov. 19. The district will begin a gravesite clean-up to align with the updated policy on Jan. 6, 2026, starting in Section F of the cemetery.

The policy states that only flowers may be placed at gravesites, with an exception for small American and Military Service flags during the days before and after Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day. Flowers, including fresh, plastic, or silk, must be placed in vases installed on the headstone. Only cemetery-provided vases may be used.

For headstones without installed vases, flowers may be placed directly on the headstone, and vases or potted plants are not allowed. For new burials up to six months old with no headstone installed, flowers may be placed on the grave in the headstone area, also without vases or potted plants. Funeral floral pieces, including stands, will remain at the graveside after a new burial until they become unsightly. Funeral flowers must be removed from the vases, and funeral plants are not allowed.

The district stated that adherence to the policy helps maintain clean and safe cemetery grounds, preserves a tranquil environment, and minimizes hazards to the public, animals, employees, and cemetery equipment.

Under the direction of the District Manager, staff and volunteers will remove flowers that have become unsightly and any items that do not meet policy requirements. Staff and volunteers are not responsible for loss or breakage of items left in the cemetery. The Atascadero Cemetery District Board of Trustees adopted the policy, and the District Manager is responsible for carrying it out.

Signs will be posted to notify the public of the cleanup, and the information is also available at atascaderocemetery.specialdistrict.org.
