Atascadero downtown El Camino Real project receives statewide public works award
Recognition presented during the Cal Cities Public Works Officers Institute
– The City of Atascadero’s El Camino Real Downtown Parking and Safety Enhancements Project has received the award for Efficient and Sustainable Road Maintenance, Construction, and Reconstruction Projects from the League of California Cities, the County Engineers Association of California, and the California State Association of Counties.
The recognition was presented during the Cal Cities Public Works Officers Institute.
The project revitalized a 0.6-mile segment of El Camino Real in downtown Atascadero and included safety enhancements, expanded parking, and streetscape improvements. According to the city, improvements included upgraded crosswalks, a new signalized crossing at East Mall, approximately 100 additional free parking spaces, including Americans with Disabilities Act accessible spaces, Americans with Disabilities Act improvements, new sidewalks and driveways, decorative pendant lighting, upgraded street lighting, landscaping, and more than 25 new street trees.
“This award from the League of California Cities is significant statewide recognition for this transformative Downtown project,” said Ryan Hayes, deputy director of public works and El Camino Real project manager.
The project began in 2017 and was developed through community engagement with residents, businesses, and stakeholders. Funding was provided in part by the offices of Sen. John Laird, Rep. Jimmy Panetta, and the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments.
The project was completed on time and within budget, according to the city.
