Atascadero Fire Department provides memorable experience for local boys
Letter submitted by Atascadero resident Becky Hochman
Special thanks to the Atascadero Fire Department for taking the time out of their busy schedules on May 20, 2018, to give my grandson, Carter Hochman and his friend Evan, a memorable experience that they will never forget.
An auction was held at San Benito Road Elementary School in Atascadero, the proceeds of which benefited the Artistan in Residence program, along with the purchase of additional new chrome books for all first-grade classes and a set for the kindergarten class.
Through the purchase of the auction item, the boys were picked up at Carter’s house and given a ride through town in the fire engine. Once at the fire department, they were given a tour of the facility, tried on the fire gear and treated to a BBQ lunch with the firemen.
After they were able to experience using the fire hose and given a ride in the vintage fire truck back to their house.
The community service program provided by the Atascadero Fire Department is only in its second year of fundraising for schools.
Most of us only hear about the firefighters’ work after the fact or see the engines racing down our busy streets, hearing those familiar sirens. But, educating our youth on a more intimate level, and putting a human touch to it as well, as to what firefighters do is vitally important for the future of our children. Let’s get the word out there about the amazing fundraising efforts for our local schools by the AFD helping children to realize that the firefighters are not some nameless or faceless people who put out the fires. They are vibrant and important members of our society who are there every day contributing at the city, county and state levels
We are so thankful to all at the Atascadero Fire Department “our everyday heroes.”
