Atascadero man sustains major injuries from motorcycle crash

Alan Dunvien was speeding, ‘popping wheelie’ according to police

–Alan Duniven, a 55-year-old Atascadero man sustained major injuries after crashing his motorcycle on Highway 58, according the California Highway Patrol.

On Monday afternoon at approximately 12:45 p.m., 52-year-old Creston resident Matthew Collar was driving his Pontiac Grand Prix on Highway 58 near the Santa Margarita Cemetery. Duniven, was riding a Kawasaki eastbound on SR58 just west of the Santa Margarita Cemetery a speed much greater than the posted 55-mph zone, according to CHP.

Witnesses claimed that prior to the collision, Duniven was observed passing traffic at a high rate of speed as Collar crested a small incline in the roadway, Duniven’s front wheel came up off the roadway into a single wheel stand, (wheelie). As Duniven came over the top of the incline, he drifted into the opposing lane directly into the path of Collar. Collar took evasive actions by heavily applying the brakes and turning towards the north shoulder. Duniven’s front wheel came back down and simultaneously collided into the driver’s side of Collar’s vehicle.

The impact caused Collar’s vehicle to spin in a counterclockwise motion where it traveled off the roadway and went through a barb wire fence belonging to Santa Margarita Ranch, and then came to rest on a dirt embankment.

Duniven was catapulted backwards in the direction that he came, coming to rest in the middle of the lanes of Highway 58. Duniven was ejected from the motorcycle into and over the pontiac and then onto the roadway.

Duniven was not wearing a protective helmet at the time of the collision and sustained major head trauma and road burns over his entire body.

Collar was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision and suffered minor injuries. No air bags were deployed.
