Atascadero Police warn public about mail fraud scam
Department says fraudulent letter and check appeared legitimate
– The Atascadero Police Department issued a warning about a mail scam involving fraudulent letters and cashier’s checks. The department said a resident recently brought in an envelope, letter, and check that appeared legitimate, but none of the materials were real.
Officials said the scam involves unsolicited mail that instructs recipients to text a number and deposit a check. The department advised the public not to text any number listed in suspicious mail and not to deposit unexpected checks. According to the department, if individuals are not expecting money, the mailing is likely a scam.
Police said scammers become more aggressive during the holiday season and encouraged residents to verify suspicious communications. “Please don’t become a victim of fraud this holiday season,” the department stated. Officials said community members may reach out to the department to confirm whether mailings are legitimate.
