‘Winter Wonderland’ event draws a large crowd despite warm weather
Thousands of people enjoy snow slope, rides, food trucks, and entertainment
– Despite warm temperatures on Friday, Winter Wonderland drew thousands of people to downtown Atascadero.
Kiwanis, Cuesta Springs Ice, and Atascadero Hay and Feed built the huge snow slide on Friday morning and afternoon.
City Manager Jim Lewis worked on the slide Friday afternoon, developing the grooves for four trails down the slope Friday night.
Assistant City Manager Terrie Banish said Friday’s weather was the warmest she remembered for the Winter Wonderland, but when the sun set, it cooled to almost chilly.
Friday night, hundreds of people lined up for a free ride down the “snow slope.”
Thousands of people enjoyed the rides, food trucks, and entertainment located in and around the Sunken Gardens.
Dancers and singers performed near the steps of the Rotunda. While many bounced on the Eruo Bungy, 9-year-old Ava of Atascadero did aerial somersaults.
The event has become one of the largest attended holiday celebrations in San Luis Obispo County.
