Atheists United SLO board member Paul Rinzler will square off with Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Ian Hutchinson on the topic “Can Science Explain Everything?: An atheist and a Christian discuss Scientism” on Jan. 27 at Cal Poly’s Veritas Forum. Rinzler will be arguing that science is the best way to know what is objectively true while Hutchinson will support the proposition that some facts fall outside the realm of science.

The event will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center’s Harmon Hall and is free to the public.

Rinzler is a professor of music at Cal Poly and is a charter member of Atheists United San Luis Obispo. A jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and author, Rinzler joined the Cal Poly faculty in 1997 as director of jazz studies. He endorses scientific skepticism which holds that empirical investigation of reality leads to the truth, and that the scientific method is best suited to this purpose.

Hutchinson is a plasma physicist and Professor of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT. In addition to authoring 200 research articles and a textbook about plasma physics, Hutchinson has written and spoken widely on the relationship between Science and Christianity. His recent book “Monopolizing Knowledge” contends that scientism undermines reason as well as religion and leads to an excessive reliance on technology.
