Aviation Career Day happening Saturday at Estrella Warbirds Museum

–The Estrella Warbirds Museum, together with the Youth Aviation Program, is hosting an Aviation Career Day on Saturday, November 16, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Thomson Hall at the Museum. This event provides the opportunity for interested people to learn about careers as commercial and military pilots, and as aircraft mechanics and technicians, from three very qualified people.
Bill Siegel, a retired military pilot who went on to commercial aviation, will present information about careers for pilots in the airline industry and answer questions from the audience. According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of airline and commercial pilots will grow at a rate of 6-percent through 2028, about as fast as the average for all occupations. The average pay for airline and commercial pilots is $115,670 per year. Bill is also the coordinator for the Young Eagle Program, sponsored by the local Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter, which provides many young people their first airplane ride.
U.S. Navy Lt. Commander Ben Andres is a reserve pilot who flies the FA-18 Hornet, one of the country’s fastest and most advanced fighter/attack aircraft. He flew two tours in Afghanistan and was an instructor pilot at Top Gun, the Naval Weapons Training School. Ben will discuss the opportunities in military aviation careers, explain the requirements, and answer questions.
Jeff Byard is a retired airline pilot, has a degree in Aeronautical Engineering, and is a certified Airframe and Powerplant mechanic with Inspection Authority (AP/I). He is also one of the world’s foremost authorities on vintage gliders. Byard will explain the requirements to become a certified aircraft mechanic and respond to any questions the group may have. Although the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of aircraft and avionics equipment mechanics will grow at 3% through 2028, slower than average for all occupations, retirements in the aging workforce of mechanics is creating good job opportunities. Aircraft mechanics can expect to earn about $63,060 per year on average.
