Award winning artist to host batik demonstration in Morro Bay
Artist Julie Dunn to demonstrate the ancient art of tempera batik May 9
–Award winning artist, Julie Dunn will hold an art demonstration from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2016 at The Art Centre in Morro Bay. Dunn paints with tempera batik on paper. Tempera batik is a style of painting that was developed to resemble true batik without the use of fabric, wax or dyes. Batik is an Indonesian word that means “to dot.”
To create her work Dunn does a line drawing on colored paper, with a permanent black marker pen. The entire painting is painted with several layers of tempera paint, without painting over the marker pen lines. The painting is allowed to dry thoroughly. Ancient Egyptians and Indians used this resist process, but today it is used around the world. Dunn’s unique style is characterized by a vivid use of color and a contrast between realism and the abstract. Before relocating to the Central Coast, Dunn taught overseas where she experienced a variety of cultures and artistic styles that influence her current work.
Dunn said this is a process oriented style of painting that can bring truly wonderful, interesting and more importantly, unexpected results. Tempera batik provides a unique vehicle of interpretation with the use of vibrant color.
